There are certain ingredients that all curlies need to avoid in any hair care product to keep their tresses looking their best. Always read the label! Don’t use products that have any of these:
Sulphates - Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is an industrial detergent used in car wash soap and to degrease car engines. Found in 90% of conventional shampoos, it is way too harsh for curly hair as it strips the hair of natural oil causing dryness and frizziness.
It is essential to use a sulphate-free cleanser as part of your curly hair care routine. Alternatively, try a cleansing conditioner: a method that has become a way of life for many curly girls. A far more gentle way to cleanse and perfect if your hair takes a few days to settle down following conventional shampoos or if you have particularly dry or coarse curls.
Watch out for: Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Sodium Laureth Sulphate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate and Ammonium Laureth Sulphate.
Mineral Oil – Mineral Oil is a by-product of crude oil and is typically found in products aimed at kinky hair type. Used as a cheap alternative to natural oils it coats the hair preventing moisture from getting into the hair shaft and causing dryness. It can also clog pores on the scalp, inhibiting hair growth.
Check the label for: Mineral Oil, Paraffin Liquidum and Petrolatum.
Silicones - Silicones are synthetic emollients that coat the hair shaft giving it a glossy appearance. Silicones are not compatible with cleansing conditioner routine as they can build up on the hair shaft leaving it dull and lank.
Avoid all ingredients ending in “cone”.
Sodium Hydroxide – Sodium Hydroxide (also called lye or caustic soda) is the straightening ingredient found in many relaxers. It works by swelling the hair shaft and breaking the strong disulphide bonds that give the hair its texture. Once these bonds are broken the hair can be reset straight. The process is irreversible.
The downside of this process is a loss of elasticity, strength and flexibility, leaving the hair much more susceptible to damage. Relaxers by their very nature are caustic which can cause burning or irritation of the scalp. Don’t be fooled by “no-lye” relaxers, they will still contain a similar strong chemical that works in the same way as sodium hydroxide.
The most frustrating thing we experience is that once you put on a hat, helmet, hair band or any other hair accessory you are committed to keeping it on, otherwise you will have a style disaster. Unfortunately hair sprays, waxes, pomades and polishes are not effective to fix curly hair styles. Tweek is specifically developed to rebuild broken hairstyles for these conditions.
For fine curly hair it is all about rebuilding or “tweeking” your hairstyle starting at the root area. Curly heads know that more movement will result in more volume. Tweek has a non-greasy formula that will allow you to apply it in small amounts to the root area and slowly create movement where needed to create volume. The focus is at the root area. Once you have dealt with the roots and worked Tweek into your hair, squeeze the rest of the Tweek through to the ends with your hands. It helps to flip your hair over forward to reach the scalp.
Thick curly hair does not usually require extra volume. In this case Tweek will control flyaway hair that pops up at the end of a day or on day two or three. At this stage, rub Tweek in between your hands and smooth onto the outer layer, flattening and controlling flyaways. For extremely thick hair use a generous amount and squeeze through to the ends as if you were going to make a pony tail, then let go and allow your hair to settle on its own.
Other scenarios where you can use Tweek:
Make sure to have open fingers, use a large amount of Tweek and drag your fingers through the scalp area. Once at the root area close your fingers and make a tight grip at the scalp. Use a little bit of movement and you will immediately lift and fix your hairstyle.
Ponytails – Curly heads have a tendency to stretch their curls out when pulling their hair back into a pony tail. This weakens the curls, especially around the face area. In this case apply Tweek throughout the full strand of the hair. Straight sections will require more attention. Squeeze your hair in your palm and hold for a couple of seconds, allowing time for the curl to reform. Hang your head over forward and squeeze the curls into place. This will give you the curl and style you are looking for.
Hair accessory is not something that should be added to any hairstyle. One must use it wisely and know when and how to use it to set off your beautiful look. There are some occasions that need hair accessories to brighten up that event such as work, social outings and formal events.
There are many hair accessories you can purchase, and different events will call for different hair accessories. So here is a quick guide to help you find the appropriate hair accessory for the occasion.
Work- in most circumstances hair will have to be worn up. Don’t wear banana clips to pull your hair back, this will make you look outdated and although will do the job, will not look chic and sophisticated. Choose hair accessories that are close to your hair color. Work hair accessories should add a little to your hairstyle, without make it the focus of your outfit.
Social and formal occasions- these occasions allows you to express your artistic side and experiment with colour. Classy, simple pieces can be perfect for social outings and can enhance the hairstyle. Simple headbands made from lace are perfect accessories that are not too over the top.
For formal events you can try matching your headpiece or accessory to your clothing. Don’t go overboard; make sure the piece is not the focus of your entire ensemble. The hair accessory should attract observers to the beauty of the hair, rather than the accessory itself. If you are unsure of which to go for, remember to use as little as possible.
The bottom line for hair accessories is that you should not add too much. If the hair accessory becomes the focus then you have added too much. Remember to keep it simple and the hair accessory will make a bold beauty statement.
As curly hair can range from mildly wavy, to very tight and frizzy, it’s important to recognize, and work with what can and can’t be done with your hair naturally.
If you have loose waves: It’s best to style wavy hair while wet (so that it falls into its naturally curly shape), and then leave it to dry and set into that style. A great way to add texture and definition to waves is to spritz it with some texturiser or sea salt spray. If you have medium curls: It’s often more advisable to wash curly hair at night, plaiting or braiding it while it’s still wet, and then sleeping with that style – it’s guaranteed to produce beautiful waves in the morning. Alternatively, you can also keep your braid from the night before for a mussed-up, boho look, or construct a new one and tuck the end up at the nape of your neck for a more romantic look.
If you have tighter ringlets: The messy bun look, mimicked by many straight-locked lasses, was made for those with very curly hair. Simply scoop up your ringlets into a high ponytail, and secure with a hair elastic, before twising into a bun and tucking the ends back through the elastic. If pieces fall out or go astray – you’ve done a good job.

A common mistake people make with curly hair is to brush or comb it as its drying. The best time to brush your curly hair is while it has conditioner in it. Once your conditioner is rinsed, no more brushing. A regular brush or comb can aggravate your strands and damage the hair cuticle, resulting in frizzy waves rather than defined curls. Using a wide-tooth comb is the most beneficial when it comes to brushing curly locks, as it eliminates any major tangles, while allowing your curls to stay intact.
When drying your hair use your towel to scrunch the hair with your hands. You should also be careful not to get too hand-happy either as over-scrunching curls can often result in an unnatural wave that’s out of control. Once you have squezzed the excess water out you can add some product. A curling balm or cream would work well . Apply by again scrunching the product into the hair.
